About this work

A generous mound of peaches and nectarines, their skins blushed pink and gold, is piled at the centre of a blue-and-white patterned porcelain plate, ringed by clusters of dark purple and pale green grapes. A few loose grapes have rolled off the plate onto the table in the lower left corner.

Warm oranges and pinks on the fruit stand out against the cool blue decoration of the plate and a muted, grayish backdrop. The canvas's visible weave shows through the thin paint layer, and confident, economical strokes give the study a fresh, informal, sketch-like quality.
