About this work
An elderly man with a weathered, smiling face wears a tall hat topped with white and pink feathers and a heavy patchwork coat trimmed with a wide fur-like collar. He tilts his head toward the viewer while presenting a rounded wooden box whose open front reveals tiny painted figures in bright costumes, arranged like a miniature stage.
The figure emerges from a dark, loosely brushed brown background, lit warmly so the feathers, collar and box catch thick, buttery highlights while the coat dissolves into shadow at the edges. Broad, loaded strokes build the costume's texture, and the tiny scene inside the box is rendered in brighter, more delicate color, giving the figure a warm, good-humored presence.
