About this work
A pale-faced boy in a red beret and patterned red-and-grey tunic stands at center, blowing into a set of bagpipes decorated with gold fringe. Behind him hangs a red banner patterned with heraldic lions, and dozens of birds — swallows, woodpeckers, magpies, finches — wheel around him in every direction. Below, folded white and grey triangular planes suggest paper boats or origami, reflected as a mirror image along the bottom edge.
A dense golden ground unifies the composition, against which the birds are painted with crisp, graphic outlines and flat, decorative color. The boy's face is smooth and softly modeled, a naturalistic note within the stylized pattern-work of banner, tartan and plumage, giving the piece a festive, storybook energy.
