About this work

A nude woman crouches on the shore of Lake Onega, wringing water from her long dark hair with one raised arm. Beside her a massive granite boulder is covered in pale ancient petroglyphs - stick-figure elk, boats, and hunters - while a white cloth lies bunched at her knee and sunlit pines and a calm bay stretch behind her.

The palette moves from the warm ochre and umber of the carved rock to the cool blue-green of water and foliage, with the figure's pale skin catching direct sunlight. Brushwork is loose and textured, built in thick dabs of paint, giving the scene a sun-warmed, quietly ritualistic mood that links the bather to the ancient rock carvings behind her.
