About this work
The scene is a tight close-up of an old building's corner, showing a drainpipe running the full height of the wall, an upper window, a curtained window with a pale cloth pulled to one side, and a narrow open doorway at ground level. A second wall section with a large paned window meets the main facade at an angle on the right.
Green, ochre and dusty pink plaster is built up in thick, cracked layers, peeling in patches to reveal pink brick underneath, while the window glass reads in cool blues and greys. The heavy impasto and mottled surface give the facade a worn, textured presence, closer to a study of decay than a picturesque townscape.
