About this work
Massive snow-streaked mountains fill the upper two-thirds of the composition, their slopes built from broad diagonal strokes of grey, white and ochre. Below, dark forested foothills descend to a cluster of small buildings with a pale bell tower sitting directly at the edge of a bright turquoise lake.
Thick palette-knife impasto builds the rock and cloud from slabs of pigment, dissolving fine detail into bold gestural texture, while the sharp cyan of the lake cuts a vivid contrast against the muted stone tones above. The scale and weather-heavy sky give the view a dramatic, weighty grandeur.
