One day in Holland

A rutted dirt track runs straight back through an open wooden farm gate flanked by low fences, framed on both sides by tall pollarded willow trees. To the right a narrow canal lined with reeds curves alongside the path; beyond the gate stretch flat green pastures with a lone tree and a small windmill on the horizon under a pale overcast sky.

Muted greens and greys dominate, with soft diffused light suggesting an overcast, humid day typical of the low-lying Dutch countryside. The willows and foreground grasses are built up with loose, textured brushwork, while the distant fields are painted more smoothly, creating calm, atmospheric depth and a sense of rural stillness.
