About this work
Five red apples, some whole and others cut into wedges or halves, are arranged across sheets of crumpled brown and white paper spread over a windowsill. A kitchen knife lies diagonally across the paper in the foreground, and a plate holding a few sliced pieces sits among the apples, with a pale curtain and window frame visible behind.
The crumpled paper is rendered in soft ochre, cream and grey folds that catch diffuse daylight from the window, while the apples stand out in warm reds against this muted wrapping. Loose, deliberate brushwork and gentle natural light give the still life a quiet, everyday, softly lit calm.
