About this work
On the far bank of a frozen river, a white church with two blue onion domes and a bell tower rises above a line of bare trees. The snow-covered foreground is broken by dark, leafless bushes and reed stalks, with a hint of open water or ice showing at the right.
The restrained palette of greys, browns and cool whites sets off the domes' blue as the sole strong accent, applied in brisk, economical strokes typical of plein-air sketching. Soft, even winter light flattens the shadows, leaving a quiet, contemplative stillness over the whole scene.
