About this work
A weathered, arch-topped double door fills the composition, its wood divided into recessed panels bordered by iron studs and two ring handles. Faint scratched crosses and small carved marks are visible on several panels. At the base of the threshold, a pair of empty leather work boots sits side by side on the stone sill.
The wood is rendered in layered ochres, browns and grey-greens, with dry, scraped brushwork that mimics real grain, cracks and old paint loss. Light falls evenly from the upper left, softening into shadow at the door's edges. The closed door and the boots left outside it, with no figure present, give the still composition a quiet, waiting mood.
