About this work
A woman stands frontally, weight on one leg, her hair gathered up with a blue ribbon at the crown. She holds a length of golden-ochre fabric loosely gathered in both hands, letting it fall and pool around her feet on a blue floor. Behind her a heavy curtain or canvas backdrop is rendered in broad silvery-white folds, filling most of the picture.
Skin tones are painted in warm, even flesh colours with soft gradations of light modelling the torso and limbs, while the backdrop is built with thick, dry, scumbled strokes of white and grey that contrast with the smoother handling of the figure.
