About this work
A solitary woman in a pale coat stands on a stone embankment beside an ornate iron railing, looking out over a narrow city canal. Warm light spills from a lamppost onto the weathered ochre and terracotta walls of the buildings beside her, while a low arched bridge and further rows of houses recede along the water toward a hazy pale sky.
Deep violet-grey dusk tones dominate the upper canvas, set against pockets of warm amber lamplight reflected in the dark water below. The paint is applied smoothly with careful architectural detail in the ironwork and brickwork, while the loosely dissolved distance and soft moon suggest a quiet, still evening in an old northern city.
