About this work
A street lamp mounted on a tall pole illuminates the bare branches of a tree in the foreground, turning them golden against the surrounding darkness of a snow-covered square. To the left stands a multi-story building with a few lit windows, and in the distance a domed tower or cathedral cupola rises above lower rooftops, while snow falls steadily through the lamplight.
Rendered in deep olive-brown and blackish-green shadow tones pierced by warm amber light, the painting uses fine, controlled brushwork to pick out individual snowflakes and the crisp silhouette of branches against the glow. The tightly detailed, almost graphic handling of light and dark creates a hushed, mysterious atmosphere of a snowy night street after dark.
