About this work

A stone church with a bell tower on the left and a taller domed drum on the right rises against a deep blue-green night sky. Broad stone steps lead up to the church terrace, and a single figure in a long dark hooded cloak climbs them, small against the mass of the building. Dark conical trees crowd the left edge, with flowering shrubs at the base of the stairs.

Warm ochre and pink light picks out the church walls against the cold, near-black sky, the contrast heightened by loose, textured brushwork on foliage and stone. The lone robed figure and empty stairway lend the scene a quiet, watchful mood, the building seeming to glow from within amid the darkness.
