About this work

A row of dim architectural silhouettes, including a tall domed structure and colonnaded facades, spreads along a distant riverbank, barely legible through heavy atmospheric murk. Below, the dark water mirrors the shapes in blurred, streaked reflections dotted with a few warm pinpoints of light.

Thick, scraped and dragged strokes of deep blue-grey, black and violet dominate the canvas, broken by a soft rose-white glow low in the sky and flecks of warm red and gold in the water. The dense, tonal handling and near-abstraction of form create a brooding, mysterious nocturne.
