About this work
A whitewashed church with tiered towers, arched blue windows and a rounded cupola fills the upper half of the canvas, its walls patched with pink and violet shadow. On the green lawn below, three figures - a woman in a red dress and two seated companions - rest on a bench near the church's arched entrance, with bare, gnarled tree trunks rising before the facade.
Loose, broken brushstrokes in white, lilac, ochre and blue build the sunlit stone, giving the architecture a soft, flickering quality rather than hard edges.
