About this work
A peaked canvas tent with blue-and-white striped curtain walls stands against a flat, hazy backdrop; beneath it lies a loose pile of garments — dark trousers, sweaters and jackets — heaped on the ground, while a separate blue jacket hangs from the tent's metal frame at the right. Thin dark lines describe the poles and guy-ropes supporting the structure.
The palette stays within a narrow range of greys, beiges and blues, the striped curtain the only strong pattern in an otherwise muted scene. Light is soft and even, without strong shadows, and paint is applied smoothly with attention to the fabric's folds. The abandoned tent and heaped clothing give the picture a quiet, still, melancholic mood.
