About this work

The entire composition is built from close values of white, ivory and pale grey, broken only by the warm flesh tones of the face, neck and hands and a touch of red at the lips. Chalky pastel strokes leave visible grain across the paper, softening edges between the figure, drapery and wall. The near-monochrome handling gives the study a hushed, tonal quietness, an exercise in subtle value rather than color.
