About this work
A young girl dressed entirely in red - a rose-patterned sweater, short skirt, tights and small shoes - sits perched on a tall, dark carved chair, hands resting on its arms. Her legs, too short to reach the floor, hang over the seat's edge against a bare wood-strip floor and plain wall.
The dominant red is built from warm oranges to deep crimson, set against a soft, mottled ochre wall that keeps the figure the sole focus. Brushwork is smooth and controlled in the face and hands, looser in the folds of fabric, giving the portrait a quiet, watchful, faintly solemn presence.
