About this work

The view runs along a wide embankment beside a snow-covered, frozen river or canal. On the far bank a row of ochre and coral-toned buildings catches low sunlight, with a golden, statue-topped dome rising above the rooftops toward the right. A slender bare tree stands on the near embankment, its thin branches silhouetted against the pale sky, while the frozen surface faintly mirrors the warm facades and cool shadows above it.

The palette plays warm ochre, coral, and gold against a cool grey-blue sky and bluish snow shadows, suggesting a low winter sun raking across the walls. Paint is applied in loose, thick strokes with visible palette-knife texture, blocking in architecture and reflections rather than rendering fine detail. The effect is a crisp, hushed winter stillness along the water.
