About this work
The Grand Canal recedes into the distance, lined on both sides by tall Venetian palazzi with arched windows and balconies, and closed off by the domes and campanile of the Salute church. Every building is mirrored in the calm water below, doubling the skyline and giving the composition a symmetrical, almost hushed stillness.
The whole surface is worked in cream, ochre and rust with passages of gold leaf, built up in thick, cracked, plaster-like layers rather than smooth brushwork. Soft, diffused light and the muted, sun-bleached palette give the view a quiet, timeworn morning glow, closer to a fresco than a straightforward view painting.
