About this work
This diptych presents two companion portraits in gothic-arched, mosaic-bordered frames decorated with roses, a unicorn, a lion and an armored rider on horseback. The left panel shows a young figure in a bird-patterned blue kerchief holding a stringed instrument resembling a cello; the right shows a figure in a red cap holding a slender bow near the chin. Behind both rises a stylized hill town of red-roofed houses and an arched aqueduct.
Each face is rendered with smooth, realistic modeling against flat, jewel-toned mosaic patterning in the borders and architecture. Deep reds, greens and golds in the frames contrast with cooler blues of sky and kerchief. Naturalistic faces set within stylized, tapestry-like surroundings give the pair a hushed, storybook mood.
