About this work
A canal stretches into thick fog, its stone-balustraded embankment lined with dark, leafy trees on both banks. A wooden rowboat is moored at the near parapet in the foreground, while a pale, ornate building with a bridge before it emerges faintly across the still water.
Muted greys, greens and dull golds dominate the palette, the whole scene softened by haze so that the architecture and its reflection nearly merge with the water. Choppy, dabbed brushstrokes build the wet stone and foliage, producing a hushed, damp atmosphere of early morning quiet.
