About this work
A dark-haired woman stands waist-deep in still water, arms lowered and palms open, her gaze lifted toward the viewer. Water lilies float near her at the water's edge, and three more nude women are visible further back, partly obscured by mist and shadow as they wade or raise their arms. A full moon hangs above dense, silhouetted trees, the only source of illumination in the scene.
The composition is painted almost entirely in blue-greens and near-black, with pale, cool flesh tones the brightest element against the gloom. Moonlight rakes across the water and the foreground figure, while the background dissolves into soft, hazy shapes. The muted palette and still, watchful pose create a hushed, nocturnal, faintly eerie mood.
