About this work
A cluster of tightly packed houses and a large hilltop cathedral-castle complex fill the upper half of the canvas, its twin spires and smaller turrets silhouetted against a pale sky. Dense green trees mask the slope below the buildings, while a row of smaller riverside houses with red-tiled roofs sits at the base of the hill. In the foreground a broad, still river reflects the sandy bank and the shapes above.
The palette is built from muted ochres, greys and greens under an overcast, even light, with the cathedral rendered in cooler grey-blue tones that separate it from the warmer town below. Brushwork is loose and blocky, simplifying architectural detail into flat planes of colour typical of a plein-air study. The overall effect is quiet and still, a calm, unhurried view of a townscape from across the water.
