About this work

Purple drapery gathers at the lower edge, and behind the pair a range of dusky blue mountains stretches under a sky faintly streaked with orange.
Skin tones are built up smoothly in warm ochres and rose against the cooler blue of the fabric and hills, with soft, diffused light falling from the upper left. The tender pose and gentle, close framing give the picture an intimate, serene warmth.
