About this work
A narrow canal runs between tall facades toward an ornate covered bridge, its dark arch framing a cluster of figures crossing against a domed building in the distance. In the foreground two gondoliers pole their black boats along the still water, with a third gondola's prow entering at the lower edge.
Warm ochre and gold dominate the heavily textured surface, with metallic leaf and scumbled pigment giving the walls a weathered, sun-bleached patina. Soft turquoise reflections in the canal contrast with the warm stone, and the hazy, glowing light lends the scene a hushed, nostalgic Venetian atmosphere.
