About this work
A pair of thin, sinewy hands with splayed fingers rise toward a small dark loaf-like shape suspended inside a glowing halo near the top of the sheet. The surrounding paper is covered edge to edge with cramped handwritten Cyrillic notes, names, and dates scratched across the surface.
Rendered in charcoal-grey washes with fine scratched white lines and dark ink blots staining the paper like age or damage, the sheet reads almost like a found document. The desperate gesture of the reaching hands against a field of faded handwriting produces a straining, anxious, mournful atmosphere.
