About this work

A row of Venetian palazzo facades lines the canal on the right, their windows and doorways glowing with warm lamplight. Two gondolas rest moored to striped poles in the foreground, while the water fills the lower half of the canvas, its surface broken into ripples that carry the buildings' reflected lights. The far end of the canal fades into atmospheric haze.

Deep teal and green water contrasts with the warm amber, pink and gold glow of the facades, the whole surface built up with thick, dabbed impasto strokes. The impressionistic handling of light and reflection gives the scene a hushed, quietly mysterious evening atmosphere.
