About this work
A tree-lined canal curves past a stone embankment and a low footbridge, its banks crowded with autumn foliage turning gold, orange and rust. Beyond the trees a pale pink building with columned windows catches the last light, while the still water below mirrors the warm sky and surrounding branches in streaks of pink and ochre.
Thick impasto strokes, applied with a palette knife, build up the leaves and stonework in dense ridges of color, while the sky and water are laid in softer, blended passes of cream, grey and rose. The warm, hazy light and heavy textured surface give the scene a mellow, glowing calm typical of a fading afternoon.
