About this work
A brass samovar dominates a wooden table draped in a crimson cloth, flanked by two clay jugs, a string of onions and a round wooden sieve. In front, a cut watermelon rests beside a paring knife, an enamel mug, a green melon and a bowl heaped with peaches and apples, set against a patchwork of blue, green and red fabric and rough log walls.
Strong side light rakes across the scene, striking the samovar's polished brass and the watermelon's pink flesh while deepening the shadows in the folds of cloth. Warm reds and ochres play against the cool blues and greens of the hanging fabric, and confident, textured brushwork gives the arrangement a hearty, sunlit stillness.
