About this work

A single oil lamp hangs by its wire bail, centered against a solid black background. Its glass chimney is angled slightly, capped by a narrow metal shade, with the wire suspension loops visible on either side and the brass fount glinting at the base.

Light is concentrated in the globe of the chimney, painted in loose strokes of cream, blue and orange that suggest reflected flame, while the rest of the canvas stays in deep shadow. Thick, confident brushwork models the metal and glass with a few decisive strokes, giving the small still life a warm, quiet glow.
