About this work
A row of snow-capped buildings in mustard-yellow and olive-green stretches along the far bank of a frozen canal, their rooflines and window ledges thickly outlined in white. The foreground is filled with a broad expanse of snow and ice on the canal itself, streaked with brown reflections, while bare trees and a low embankment appear at the left edge.
Thick, confident strokes of ochre, olive, and grey-white are laid on with a loaded brush, leaving visible ridges of paint especially in the snow and rooftops. The soft grey sky and muted, earthy building tones give the view a still, cold, overcast winter calm.
