About this work
A humpbacked stone bridge spans a calm canal in the foreground, small figures and market stalls crossing it toward the long curved colonnade and central dome of a cathedral rising in the middle distance. Street lamps, a traffic sign and low buildings line the embankment on either side of the water.
Muted greys and soft ochres fill the overcast sky and stonework, relieved by warm golden light reflecting off the near bank and small red awnings among the crowd. Smooth, controlled brushwork and gentle atmospheric haze give the view a calm, everyday realism.
