About this work
A tight cluster of women in torn white and pale garments cling to one another in shallow water, their faces contorted in fear as they reach toward the viewer. Bare-chested men run through the surf at the edges, one fleeing into a huge breaking wave, while a shipwreck's silhouette tosses on the churning sea behind them under a bright full moon breaking through storm clouds.
Muted greys, blacks and blues dominate the stormy sky and sea, punctuated by pale flesh tones and white drapery lit by moonlight. Careful academic modeling of anatomy and cloth contrasts with the loose, turbulent strokes of the clouds and waves, creating an intense, apocalyptic mood of collective terror.
