About this work
A hunched, robed figure with closed eyes and a radiating golden halo dominates the left side, hands emerging from the cloak's folds. To the right a gnarled black tree holds a single staring eye in its trunk, more half-hidden eyes peering from nearby foliage. Between them, spired towers of a half-buried town rise from a foreground packed with small round eye- and flower-like forms.
The surface is worked in a fine, obsessive stipple of ochre, bronze, and black, so the paint reads almost like an engraving. Light comes only from the halo's gold rays, drawing the eye to the bowed, sorrowful face while the rest sinks into shadow. The dense patterning gives the picture a brooding intensity.
