About this work
A tangerine has been peeled open on a small white saucer, its bright flesh exposed beside its discarded curling rind, while a second whole tangerine and several loose segments sit on a lace-trimmed blue cloth. Behind them, a heavier indigo drape folds into soft diagonal creases filling the background.
Cool blues and slate greys set off the saturated orange of the fruit, the strongest color note in the composition. Loose, confident brushwork describes the lace pattern and fabric folds with quick highlights, while the fruit itself is more tightly modeled, giving the still life a fresh, quietly cheerful feel.
