About this work

A tall glass-chimneyed kerosene lamp stands beside a large black pot filled with potatoes on a red-topped wooden table; two more potatoes rest on a white cloth spread beside it. A blue wooden chair is pulled up to the table, and a scrap of paper is pinned to the plank wall behind, its wood grain showing in warm horizontal bands.

Warm ochre and honey tones of the wood dominate, set off by the pot's deep black and the lamp's cool teal-green base. Soft, even light models the rounded forms with careful realism, and the composition's quiet, everyday objects give the still life a calm, homely mood.
