About this work
Clustered houses with terracotta roofs and pale walls tumble down a hillside in the lower right, their rooflines and window openings sketched in quick, confident strokes. Behind them, layered ridges of hills and distant blue mountains recede toward a bright, cloud-streaked sky, with a sunlit valley opening at lower left.
Warm ochre and rust tones of the village play against cool blue-violet mountains and green slopes, unified by a strong raking light that picks out rooftops and treetops. Broad, loaded brushstrokes and visible knife work keep the forms loose and painterly rather than detailed, giving the view an immediate, open-air freshness.
