About this work
The canvas is filled entirely with irises growing close together in a garden bed, their ruffled petals shown in deep purple, magenta, pale yellow, white and blue against tall green blades. No sky, horizon or other objects appear; the flowers occupy the whole picture plane in an all-over pattern.
Applied with a palette knife in thick, chunky ridges, the paint builds each petal from raw, unblended color. The high-key, saturated palette and vigorous, textured surface give the flowerbed a lively, sun-drenched energy typical of loose, gestural garden painting.
