About this work

A large oval metal basin leans against the wall beside a tall stone-grey jug, with a light-blue enamel pitcher standing on a pale turquoise stool in the foreground. Behind them, a cabinet holds several dark, carved or gourd-like objects lost in shadow. The grouping is arranged low and close, filling the canvas with overlapping vessels.

The palette stays within browns, blue-greys and muted turquoise, with light falling from the upper right to pick out the basin's rim and the pitcher's curve. Paint is applied in broad, matte strokes with visible canvas texture, and deep shadow fills the background, giving the arrangement a hushed, still feel.
