About this work
In tight vertical framing, a peaked ridge of sheet rises against the top of the canvas, its dark triangular hollow reading like a sudden furrow. Below, a soft, deeply creased pillow spreads across the lower half, its folds carved by heavy shadow. No figure is present, only bedding twisted into a dense knot of light and dark.
The grayscale palette runs from near-black shadow to chalky highlight, giving the composition strong tonal contrast rather than the softer grays of the other panels. Brushwork is smooth and tightly blended, describing fabric with an almost sculptural weight. The stark light and cramped framing lend the image a taut, mysterious tension.
