About this work
A woman lies curled on her side asleep, her face turned toward the viewer and resting against a pillow. She is largely enveloped in a heavy quilt patterned with red and white flowers, which spills across most of the bed, while one bare leg and shoulder emerge from beneath the fabric. A strip of black-and-white animal-print cloth appears at the lower corner of the bed.
The composition is built from a dense, high-contrast pattern of red blossoms against cream, painted in careful, even strokes rendering every fold of fabric. Skin tones are warm and softly lit against the cooler grey-white sheets, and the tight framing and closed eyes give the scene an intimate, peaceful stillness.
