Long, fluid hatching builds the deep folds of the cloak into a single dark mass, against which the pale, lined face stands out sharply. The ghostly apparition dissolves into looser, sketchier strokes, barely distinguishable from the surrounding darkness, lending the whole scene a weary, visionary hush.
