About this work
A nude body is shown collapsed diagonally across a bare, mottled ground, head and one arm reaching toward the lower left while the legs stretch to the upper right, one foot tethered by a length of rope or netting. Dark drapery bunches over the shoulders and upper back, leaving the arms, torso and legs exposed.
Painted in muted ochre, grey and umber tones with the raw canvas showing through in places, the figure is built from loose, dragged brushstrokes that blur into the equally toned ground. The absence of a clear horizon or setting, combined with the sprawled, falling pose, gives the scene a heavy, tragic weight consistent with a study of a fall.
