About this work
A huntsman in a plumed tricorn and gold-trimmed coat shoulders a musket as spotted hounds leap through mint-green fabric folds; a woman with powdered hair and a ruffled white collar looks on at right. Between them, clipped topiary globes strung with roses and blossoms surround a red-crested pheasant striding through the grass, while stylized gold leaves drift across the pale ground.
The palette is dominated by pale ivory, sage green, and warm gold-leaf accents that give the birds' feathers and falling foliage a raised, almost appliquéd texture against smoothly painted skin and drapery. Flat, ornamental space replaces deep perspective, and the mix of decorative pattern with genre subject creates a light, storybook playfulness.
