About this work
A man's bowed head, crowned with a twisted ring of thorns and framed by matted hair and beard, rests low against an immense wall of rough-hewn stone blocks. His shoulders hunch forward under a grey mantle, hands drawn together at his chest, while a pale, indistinct form lies across his lap in the lower foreground.
Heavy impasto builds the wall's ochre and umber blocks into a cracked, tactile surface, against which the face emerges in warm rust and shadow. Thick, knife-applied paint and a narrow band of grey-white drapery interrupt the earthen palette, producing a somber mood of weary suffering and quiet resignation.
