About this work
A stylized, statue-pale face with wide, fixed eyes looks out from beneath an elaborate jester's cap of red, black and gold horn-like points trimmed with hanging bells and beads. Multiple necklaces of large faceted stones in red, blue, green and purple loop across the shoulders, and the gilded word "Harlequin" is inscribed on the dark cloak below.
The mottled gold background carries visible impasto and a crackled, aged texture, while the face itself is painted in flat, cool greys that read almost as carved stone against the warm ornament surrounding it. The contrast between the blank head and the richly decorated costume gives the figure a theatrical, faintly unsettling presence.
