About this work
A canal bends gently away from the viewer, lined on both sides by stone embankments with balustrades and lampposts, and overhung by tall trees in full summer leaf. Buildings in soft ochre and rose rise along the far bank, their facades partly screened by foliage, while small figures move along the walkways beneath an expansive, cloud-streaked sky.
Loose, thick strokes of green, gold and blue-white build the canopy of leaves, echoed in shimmering, broken reflections across the canal's surface. The architecture is suggested with quick, economical touches rather than fine detail, and warm light throughout gives the scene an airy, unhurried, plein-air freshness.
