About this work
The canal stretches away in a straight perspective, flanked by rows of pastel yellow, pink and white buildings at right and a darker stone embankment at left. Small figures, a low footbridge and colorful market umbrellas dot the far bank while the multicolored onion domes of a cathedral appear faintly at the vanishing point.
Soft, hazy brushwork blurs the architectural detail into a gentle blue-grey atmosphere, broken by warm ochre reflections rippling across the water. The muted, diffused palette and visible canvas weave give the cityscape a quiet, contemplative calm of an overcast afternoon.
